The Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA)



The Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA) is a non-profit organization registered in Nairobi, Kenya in 1993. It functions as the umbrella organization for the regional and national neuroscience societies and groups in Africa. SONA is a member society of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO).

The aim of SONA is to promote research, teaching and advocacy in Neuroscience in Africa and the Society holds an international conference every two years. The Conference provides a platform for Private and Public Companies and Organizations in the Science domain, especially the brain sciences, and in the Technology sector to interface with these neuroscientists.

Call for Nominations: General Secretary and Executive Committee Members of SONA

Dear SONA Members,

 We are delighted to remind you that the 17th International Conference of the Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA) will be held from April 17–20, 2025, in Marrakech, Morocco. The General Assembly of SONA is scheduled for Sunday, April 20, 2025, at 5:45 PM. During this important biennial meeting, as mandated by the society's statutes, members will vote for:

  • The Secretary-General
  • Assistant Secretary General
  • The Treasurer
  • Regional Representatives (North Africa, Southern Africa, Central Africa, East Africa and West Africa)
  • The next host country/site for the SONA conference

The SONA Executive Committee, in consultation with recognized SONA leaders, is pleased to announce the Call for Nominations for the following positions:

 

1.      Chair of Governing Council

Eligibility criteria for nominees:

·

  • Must be a SONA member
  • Hold a full-time position at an academic or research institution in Africa
  • Be a senior neuroscience researcher with an active university or research center role
  • Have attended at least two recent SONA conferences
  • Organized at least three neuroscience activities in their country in the past five years
  • Be present at SONA 2025
  • Never been Chair of the Governing Council
  • Must not be A current member of the African Regional Committee of IBRO

   
2. Secretary-General of SONA

Eligibility criteria for nominees:

  • Must be a SONA member
  • Hold a full-time position at an academic or research institution in Africa
  • Be a senior neuroscience researcher with an active university or research center role
  • Have attended at least two recent SONA conferences
  • Organized at least three neuroscience activities in their country in the past five years
  • Be present at SONA 2025
  • Must not be A current member of the African Regional Committee of IBRO

Nomination requirements:

  • A recent short CV (maximum three pages, Times New Roman, 12pt)
  • A letter of intent explaining the candidate’s motivation for serving as  Secretary General
  • A four-year plan for developing SONA activities, including a timeline
  • A signed commitment to adhere to the SONA constitution

 
3. Assistant Secretary General, Treasurer, and Regional Representatives (North, Southern, Central, East, and West)

Eligibility criteria for nominees:

  • Must be a SONA member
  • Hold a full-time position at an academic or research institution in Africa
  • Have organized neuroscience activities in their country in the past five years
  • Be present at SONA 2025
  • Not be a member of the African Regional Committee of IBRO
  • Not be a member of the current SONA Executive Committee

 
Nomination Process

  • All SONA members who have paid their membership fees are eligible to nominate candidates and vote at the General Assembly.
  • Only one candidate for chair of the Governing Council will be nominated by the Executive Committee with the agreement of all members
  • Only one candidate for Secretary General will be nominated by the Executive Committee with the agreement of all members.

 
Submission Deadline

April 6, 2025, at midnight (Morocco time).
Late nominations will not be accepted.

A Nominating Committee, advised by the General Assembly, will oversee the nomination and voting process.

Voting for the Secretary-General will occur during the General Assembly (GA) Meeting at SONA 2025.
